Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
