Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi low starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at first, following a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting collection of wagering choices and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and several battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
